Soraya Hekmat (November 25, 1953 - April 8, 2016)
Veteran actress Azar Mehdi-Qolikhani, known with her artistic name Soraya Hekmat, (November 25, 1953 - April 8, 2016), was an Iranian film and television actress.
She has had no artistic activity for more than a decade and was grappling with financial difficulties the years before her death.
Born in Khoy, a county in West Azerbaijan Province in Iran, Hekmat started her work in art from theatre in the early 1970s. She was first cast in a movie in 1974.
She is known for her roles in movies ‘Swan Song | Avaz-e GHoo’ (2000), Nasser Taghvai's memorable ‘O Iran’ (1990), ‘Courtship’ (1989), ‘Big Forest’ (1985) and ‘The Barbed Wire’ (1981).
She played roles in TV series ‘From House to House’, ‘Distance’, ‘Apartment’, and ‘The First Man | Mard-e Avval’ (1976). "Avaz-e Ghoo" (2001) was the last movie in which she apeared.
On August 4, 2014, at the age of 61, Hekmat announced that she was living in extreme poverty, so that she is not able to secure her housing deposit and after some time she has no other choice than to live in a tent. Soraya Hekmat, who was once a star in Iranian cinema, now could not even afford to pay for her dental treatment. According to her own words, when she referred to the Ministry of Guidance, she even requested to pre-purchase her grave in artists' segment for sale during her lifetime to make ends meet. Some people asked for help to this artist after the publication of her pain report. Stating that she is in a very bad financial situation, she said: After 35 years of work and 61 years of age, they do not accept me as a veteran actress. As a result, I have been living in a tent for a while now.
She was earlier hospitalized due to drug problems. After some improvement she was again moved to the hospital on April 4, 2016, due to paroxysm and cerebral thrombosis, causing her to fall into a coma, ISNA reported.
Hekmat died in the morning of Friday 8 April 1916 at the age of 61 due to seizures and blood clots. Her body was buried next to Mehri Mehrnia, another well-known Iranian actress, in artists' segment of Tehran's Behesht-e Zahra cemetery.
