The distinguished director, who already received the Golden Lion in Venice in 2000, was arrested in July together with two other filmmakers. In addition to him, the Golden Bear awardee was also arrested Mohammad Rasoulof and Mostafa Al Ahmad.
In a new film based on his real experience, Panahi paints a picture of the reality of Iranians in Turkey who are desperately trying to escape to Europe. At the same time, it also follows a filmmaker who is trying to make a film on the other side of the border in Iran.

Winner of several international awards, Panahi was arrested in Tehran in July. He will have to serve a six-year prison sentence handed down to him in 2010, when he was arrested for supporting anti-government demonstrations. For “propaganda against the system” he was sentenced to six years in prison, banned from making films and forbidden to leave the country. In 2010, he spent only two months in prison, after which he was released on parole with the possibility of revoking the decision at any time.

Panahi and Rasoulof committed to creating
Panahi was arrested again on July 11 this year, when he went to the prosecutor’s office to inquire what was happening to the arrested filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof, who together with Panahi in an open letter in May condemned the arrests of several colleagues in their homeland. Panahi and Rasoulof issued a defiant statement through Venice organizers last week, pledging to continue making art.

Actress and president of this year’s festival jury, Julianne Moore, was joined by dozens of other artists at the protest, who held placards in their hands, with which they drew attention to the detained Myanmar director Ma Aeint and Turkish producer Cigdem Mater.
Otherwise, the 79th International Film Festival concludes in the evening with the award ceremony in Venice. 23 films are competing for the Golden Lion this year. This year, the recipients of the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement are the director and screenwriter Paul Schrader and a French actress Catherine Deneuve.
The festival opened the film on the last day of August White Noise (White Noise) by the director Noah Baumbach in which they starred, among other things Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig. Many big names in world cinematography took part in the festival again this year, Italian, French and American being the most strongly represented.
All the films that will compete for the Golden Lion had their world premiere at the festival. In addition to Baumbach, other films were also shown in the main competition program Florian Zeller, Darren Aronofsky, Jafar Panahi, Alejandro Inarritu, Todd Field, Romain Gavras and Emanuele Crialese. A film was also included in the competition Blonde (Blonde) director Andrew Dominica dark tale of the tragic life of a film icon Marilyn Monroewhich is considered one of the favorites.

A Slovenian minority co-production was also included in the official competition program of Obzor Happiest man in the world Teone Strugar Mitevska. The sixth feature film of the Macedonian director and screenwriter had its world premiere at the festival.
The festival also took place on Thursday. i. Ukrainian Day, on which, in light of the war in Ukraine, they expressed solidarity with the country and support for their artists.
