Panahi, Jafar |
Date of birth

Director | Writer | Editor
Jafar Panahi (July 11th, 1960, Mianeh, Iran)
Born on July 11th 1960 in Mianeh (Iran), he studied directing at Teheran's College of Cinema and Tv. Before turning to feature films, he made several short and medium-length films for Iranian television and served as assistant director on Abbas Kiarostami Zir-e darakhtan-e zeytun.
His highly-successful and critically acclaimed directorial debut, 1995's Badkonak-e sefid, received numerous awards, including the Camera d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
“In a world where films are made with millions of dollars, we made a film about a little girl who wants to buy a fish for less than a dollar.”
In 1992, he directed a fiction, Doust (The Friend), which was a homage to Kiarostami's first short film called Nan va kucheh (The Bread and the Street). Hired as his assistant for Zir-e Derakhtan e-Zeytun (Through the Olive Trees, 1994), Panahi told Kiarostami about an idea he had for a film.
In 1997 Ayneth received the Locarno Festival's Golden Leopard, and confirmed the young director's renown as an innovative and insightful filmaker. Badkonak-e sefid (The White Balloon) was selected for the Quinzaine des réalisateurs at Cannes and won the Caméra d'or.
