Abbasi, Ali |
Date of birth
1981, Tehran, Iran
Ali Abbasi (1981, Tehran, Iran)
In 2002 he gave up his studies at Teheran Polytechnic University and travelled to Europe, where he finally settled in Stockholm, Sweden.
In 2007 he graduated with a BA in architecture and subsequently began his education as a director at the National Film School of Denmark, where he graduated in 2011.
Abbasi's feature film debut 'Shelley' (2015) premiered in the Panorama section of the 2016 Berlinale. Supported by the Danish Film Institute’s talent scheme, New Danish Screen. The film was premiered in the Berlin Film Festival’s Panorama programme 2016 and has since been selected for a number of festivals, including Munich, Sarajevo and Montreal.
"I started as a writer, writing short stories, before I did anything with movies, and I was very inspired by surrealism and magical realism—especially the South American writers like Gabriel García Márquez, Carlos Fuentes, Julio Cortázar. And the reason was that, growing up in Iran, reality is a bit jelly-like. It’s not solid. It can change, it’s opaque, it’s very tricky, and sometimes it’s so strange and weird that you just can’t believe. So the idea that there is a fantastical element within your everyday life and it’s not a dragon flying by, that is very easy for me to grasp. And that’s what we tried to do with _Border_."
